Prepare the Way: A 21-Day Reading Plan Through John by Justeina Brownlee

DAY 14 OF 21

Day 14: Good News in Bad Times

Read John 14

In difficult times, it’s easy to feel discouraged and overwhelmed. We look around and see challenges, uncertainties, and hardships, both in our personal lives and in the world at large. Yet, in John 14, Jesus offers us comforting words: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me” (John 14:1). In this passage, Jesus reassures His disciples during a moment of deep confusion and fear, reminding them that He has a Plan and that their future is secure.

1. There’s a Rescue Plan

In the midst of uncertainty, Jesus promises that He will come back and take us to be with Him. He tells His disciples, “I will come back and take you to be with me” (John 14:3). This is more than a Promise for the disciples; it is a Promise for all of us. No matter what difficulties we face, we can trust that Jesus will rescue us from this world’s troubles and bring us to a place of eternal safety and peace.

Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern of God rescuing His people. From delivering Israel out of Egypt to sending Jesus to save us from sin, God’s Rescue Plan is woven throughout history. This gives us hope that no matter what we’re going through now, God is working out His Plan for our ultimate good.

2. There’s a Better Place Prepared

Jesus also tells us that He is preparing a place for us. “My Father’s house has many rooms” (John 14:2), He says, assuring us that there is more than just this life. Heaven, our Eternal Home, is waiting for us. While this world is filled with pain and challenges, our true hope lies in the future that Jesus is preparing—a future where there will be no more suffering.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does Jesus’ Promise of a Future Home with Him bring you comfort in tough times?
  2. How can the knowledge of Jesus’ Rescue Plan change your perspective on current struggles?
