Prepare the Way: A 21-Day Reading Plan Through John by Justeina Brownlee

DAY 13 OF 21

Day 13: Pick Up a Towel

Read John 13

On the night before His Crucifixion, Jesus taught His disciples one of His most powerful lessons—not through words, but through action. He picked up a towel and washed their feet. In a world where foot-washing was a job for the lowest servant, Jesus humbled Himself and served. He wanted to show that true greatness lies not in being served, but in serving others.

Jesus told His disciples, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). This act of washing feet was more than just a display of humility; it was a call to action. Jesus showed them that the best way to reach others is through service, not power.

In our daily lives, picking up a towel means serving our family, friends, coworkers, and community without seeking recognition. It could be helping with household chores, supporting someone in need, or volunteering in ways that go unnoticed. Jesus’ example teaches us that even the smallest acts of service done in love reflect His Character.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What opportunities do you have in your daily life to serve others, and how can you be more intentional about taking them?
  2. How can Jesus’ example of washing the disciples' feet inspire you to overcome pride and serve others selflessly?
