“A Good Report”
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report.” —Hebrews 11:1-2
We all like the idea of receiving a good report. In Scripture, we see men and women of God walking through adversity, dealing with famine, and facing giants, yet emerging victorious on the other side. What is the key component to receiving this good report? It is living a life of faith! To truly understand these Scriptures, we need to understand how faith comes. Faith is not mechanical, nor is it some sort of formula. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).
This is not about memorizing Scripture; it is about a relationship. Every time we hear the Word of God, every time we read the Word of God, every time we meditate on the Word of God and ponder it in our hearts, we are getting to know our Creator, getting to know our Healer, and encountering the One who has plans and purpose for us. It is through this relationship that we can see what God sees. And that is what gives us hope. Hope is a blueprint and an expectation for us to stand and receive what God has promised.
If faith comes by hearing God’s Word, then we could say that the Word is the substance of things hoped for, and the Word is the evidence of things not seen. The Word is how the elders obtained a good report. For instance, Abram was childless, yet God said he would be the father of many nations. When God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, meaning “father of many nations,” Abraham was able to hold onto that word. That word became his evidence of what he couldn’t see! He obtained a good report when he brought forth Isaac, and today, in Scripture, he is considered our Father in the Faith. This good report came to pass because of his relationship with Almighty God and the word that the Almighty God spoke.
So today, determine to build a relationship with God through His Word. Get to know Him and all that He is. As your relationship grows, you will obtain a good report!
About this Plan
Faith is more than a term—it’s essential to our Christian life. It’s not a sermon, denomination, or movement. Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:11 remind us that "the just shall live by faith." Hebrews 11:1 also teaches, "Without faith, it is impossible to please Him." As children of God, we must cultivate and strengthen our faith. Over the next 14 days, Pastor Justin Bridges will lead us through Hebrews 11, showing us how to apply faith in our lives and how to live victoriously by faith, just like those heroes of faith who went before us.
