Sacred Moments With Christ

DAY 2 OF 5

In our second passage in Luke 2, Jesus is a bit older—12. His parents have taken him to Jerusalem, and once they leave, it takes them a day to realize he has not journeyed back with them. By the time they return to the city and find him, Jesus had been at the temple, without his parents, for three days.

Mary brings Jesus off to the side and asks him a question: essentially, don’t you know we were a mess not knowing where you were? Why were you here and not with us?
And Jesus gives this powerful response that speaks to the nature of his divinity. He is the Son of the Father, and what he’s saying here is that he is attending to the business for which he was called.

Yet, his mother didn’t understand what he meant. Again, they knew Jesus was the Messiah, but they had no idea how that would play out. Perhaps they thought his path would look much different—a palace rather than a temple.

But even in the mystery, again, Mary did something special: she treasured up all these things in her heart.

Tomorrow, we will look at this idea of treasuring up something, or someone, in our heart. Today, reflect on your own understanding of who Christ is, what he accomplished on earth, and how that affects how you live your life with a Kingdom mindset.

About this Plan

Sacred Moments With Christ

Twice in Luke 2, Mary is described as treasuring what she witnessed in Jesus's life. She pondered the sacred moments God brought her into. In this five-day reading plan, Brittany Rust explores those moments and how we might both treasure and ponder God's work and Person.
