Her Freedom Journey From Pornography: 6 Days of Ditching Lies and Embracing Truth

DAY 6 OF 6

Day 6: Breaking Free from Lies: Memorizing Scripture

The Bible isn’t just one opinion or perspective to add to the others. It is truth. Truth is the only weapon we have to expose and defeat lies. Reading, memorizing, and meditating on God’s Word retrains our minds from being entrenched in lies to walking in what is true.

Let’s look again at the list of commonly believed lies together:

Satan’s Big Lie #1You can’t trust God’s Word.

Satan’s Big Lie #2Nothing bad will happen.

Satan’s big lie #3You can’t trust God.

Satan’s Big Lie #4You will never be whole.

Think through which of these lies you resonate with most. What could be some of the fears your core lies expose?

What would change in your life if you fully believed that God’s Word is the truth needed to counter these lies?

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32). Discovering the truth will set us free!

Now it’s your turn to point out your lies. There is incredible power in identifying and naming the lies you believe.

Read this account of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness and notice His weapon of choice:

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matt. 4:1–4)

As a man, Jesus was the most powerful human to ever walk this planet, and what did He use to fight against Satan? God’s Word. This shows us the power of Scripture. It’s safe to assume that Jesus knew the content and significance of Scripture. And, He quoted God’s Word to fight against Satan and temptation.

This shows us two things: God’s Word has the power to remove Satan and temptations, and, to use this power, we need to memorize Scripture. Having key verses ready immediately arms us to fight when we are in battle. Most of us know that Scripture is powerful, but we fail to take the time to memorize it.

Take some time to mediate on and memorize one of these verses to arm you in your battle against sin:

Isaiah 41:10, Romans 5:8, 8:35–39 , Luke 12:27–28, Deuteronomy 3:22

Beneath every sexual struggle is an undercurrent of lies. Lies might begin in your thoughts, but they don’t stay there. In time, they flow into your beliefs, emotions, and actions. Your freedom journey involves learning to discern the lies you believe about sexuality, about yourself, and about freedom and to confront those lies with the power of God’s truth.
