Faith-Based Ways to Navigate Financial Uncertainty

DAY 1 OF 3

Money is something that is fundamentally part of the human experience. We need it, and if we don’t have it, we want it.

Oftentimes money is safety, security, opportunity, even. And yet, another fundamental truth is money comes and goes.

There will be seasons in your life when you have more or less of it. ⅓ of Americans say they couldn’t afford a $400 emergency. Money, or the lack thereof, is a genuine concern for many people.

How do you handle the inevitable bout of financial stress? Do you turn to comforts like food or zoning out on your phone? Do you bury your head in the sand? Do you lash out at people in your life or displace your anger and frustration?

Over the next couple of days, I’m going to share 3 ways to navigate times of financial turmoil as followers of Christ. I pray that these devotionals be but a vessel for a message that was destined to reach you in this trying time.

Today we’ll get into the first tip: lean into the Word.

Folks say there’s an answer for every question in the Bible. Personally, I’ve had a lot of questions in my life and it’s never failed me. Not once.

When you’re going through money-related stress, the world gets LOUD, doesn’t it? Phone calls from collectors, unsolicited advice from family and friends, your own intrusive thoughts. That’s why now more than ever you need God to speak louder.

Make space for His word to quiet the worries.

When I was drowning in credit card debt and living in my car, this passage really spoke to me.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105

It doesn’t say a “light as bright as the sun” it says lamp. You know what that means? You’re walking in faith. Even if the whole path is not illuminated, you walk confidently as the Lord orders your step.

You don’t need to see the whole path to trust that you are kept and protected by the Most High. Just put one foot in front of the other and take the next step.

Let’s pray together:

Lord, I want to hear your voice, but my worries are loud. If there’s a message I need to receive, clear the path and make it known. I will listen and I will study your Word. I decree and declare that this moment of financial stress is just that: a moment. I am safe in Your embrace. In Your Holy name I pray. Amen.
