Two Gifts From God: Singleness and Marriage

DAY 2 OF 6

A Kind Concession, Never a Command

Is it ok to be single? Do we have to be married? In verse 6, Paul states a concession, not a command, regarding believers’ choices concerning marriage. At first glance, it may seem that Paul is referring to the temporary separation of married couples for prayer and devotion. However, a closer examination reveals that he references the general inclination toward marriage, as in verse 2. Paul clarifies that his words are not a command from God but a concession, underscoring that God does not mandate marriage for everyone. In other words, singleness with sexual purity is an honorable option in the eyes of the Lord.

As we ponder Paul’s words, it becomes evident that God’s desire is not to constrain us into specific marital roles but to grant us the freedom to choose what aligns with our calling and gifting. Marriage is a beautiful institution established by God, offering companionship and protection against sexual immorality for those who lack self-control. However, marriage is not the sole solution; it is one of two paths available to believers.

For single people, take a moment to contemplate the significance of this truth. Singleness, coupled with sexual purity, is not a second-rate option or a position of deficiency. On the contrary, it can be a profound demonstration of devotion to God and an opportunity to live out His calling in unique ways. Just as marriage offers companionship, singleness offers an undivided focus on the Lord and service to His kingdom.

Yet, embracing singleness is not about dismissing the desire for marriage; rather, it is about aligning our hearts with God’s plan for our lives. If the yearning for marriage persists, it is not a sin. Marriage is a precious gift from God, and those who choose this path should do so with joy and gratitude. However, let us also recognize that being single is a divine calling that should not be viewed with disdain or frustration.

The challenge for all of us, single or married, is to seek God’s guidance and contentment in our circumstances. We are complete in Christ, and our fulfillment comes from Him alone, not our marital status. May we learn to trust His perfect plan for our lives, knowing His wisdom surpasses our understanding. We are all called to pursue holiness and fulfill the unique purpose He has designed for us. Let us celebrate the diversity of God’s plan for His people, respecting the choices of others and seeking unity in the body of Christ. Whether single or married, your life is a precious gift from God, who desires to use you for His glory. Seek His will, embrace His plan, and find true contentment in Christ alone.
