How to Handle the Crossroads of Lifeনমুনা
Lessons from the life of Moses
In our formative years, we have fragmented ideas of what we think we will be when we grow up. We are not sure because our interest development at this stage has its root in many things that we may later find irrelevant or inconsequential. The story of Moses gives us insight into what happens to most of us when we come to a crossroads of our calling and purpose in life.
Moses had an encounter with God while rearing Jethro's cattle, a meeting that would define the rest of his life. God called Moses to rescue the Israelites from the land of captivity, but Moses protested.
A critical look into Moses' questions reflects his inner dialogue. He said, "Who am I to appear before Pharaoh?" This question reflects self-doubt, poor self-image, low self-esteem, and probably an identity crisis. He continued, “What if they won’t believe or listen to me?" This question reflects an issue with credibility, trust and approval. His past as a murderer may have set the tone for such question, but these weren't the only thing Moses was worried about.
Exodus 4:10, “But Moses pleaded with the Lord, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now." This question relates to his competence and ability. Internally, Moses was going through a lot. What can we learn from these? God never confronted Moses about his incompetence or defects; Moses brought it up. Suffice it to say that most of what holds us back in life are often our own inner insecurities. God was aware of his defects before He called him. Before God, it wasn't an issue, but with Moses, it was an impediment.
Surprisingly, we never knew Moses was a stammerer until the time came to rise to a higher calling. No one knew Moses had an identity conflict until he arrived at this crucial crossroads. We would never have guessed Moses had issues with insecurities and credibility until God confronted him to heed his call. What is the moral? When you are at a tipping point in your life to rise to a higher altitude of responsibilities or calling, it is likely that your inadequacies will surface. What we do at this crucial moment really counts.
There will be thoughts of self-doubt, incompetence, or being an imposter. When you start experiencing this, you are at a tipping point. You are at a crossroads of a significant shift in your life. As long as Moses keeps rearing Jethro's cattle, he seems okay, but imagine a person destined to set the Israelites free ended his life rearing cattle. What a misplaced life that would have been.
At the crossroads of your calling, believe what God says about you. No one knows a product better than its manufacturer. You have to take captive every thought and argument that negate the voice and promises of God for your life. God has not disqualified you, so do yourself a favor; don’t disqualify yourself.
Who are you not to lead? Step out of obscurity. Step out of fear and doubt and stop that negative self-talk. You've survived your past for this moment; it is time to take your place.
