DAY 33 OF 40

#BeAFriend (Chlöisu Burkhalter)

After careful consideration, I decided to speak to a friend concerning an aspect of her behavior that I considered to be destructive. I can’t remember exactly what I told her, but I will probably always remember her reaction. At first she was silent for a moment. Then what I never expected happened. With tears of emotion, she thanked me for caring enough for her to tell her my honest opinion.

The reality and honesty of that moment was etched into my heart and I deeply hope that we will experience many more such situations.

These days such dimensions of fellowship are quickly getting lost, as we do not want to offend anybody. However, we rob each other of the possibility to change. Sometimes we even let a friend’s behavior cause harm to himself and others and bring about difficulties.

In contrast to that, the Bible speaks of the fellowship of the first Christians as bringing “gladness” and that it was characterized by “sincere hearts” (Acts 2:46). This community was a place of encouragement but also of admonition, knowing about the unconditional goodwill toward each other.

This unconditional goodwill is the necessary foundation for honesty without compromise. And it is this exact goodwill that will continue urging us to be honest. Because we want what is best for others, we dare to challenge each other. And because we know that the other person has our best interest at heart, we are able to accept such challenging feedback and admit our own weaknesses.

Are your friends important enough for you to be uncompromisingly honest more often? I want to react like that lady more often and recognize the goodwill behind the well-meant feedback. For true fellowship also means honesty.

Actionstep:

How do you react when someone gives you such challenging feedback? Are you ready not only to treat your friends with unconditional goodwill but also with uncompromising honesty?
