Our Relationship with God: The First, Second, and Third Commandments
The first three commandments are not optional guidelines for better living; they are divine commands from God Himself. They establish the foundation of our relationship with Him, calling us to communion, obedience, and moral living that reflects His holiness. These commands challenge us to center our lives on Him, align with His character, and foster the harmony and righteousness He desires for His people.
The first commandment—“You must not have any other god but me” (Exodus 20:3)—calls us to exclusive devotion. For the Israelites, this meant rejecting the gods of surrounding nations. For us, it means putting God above all else in a world filled with distractions. Modern idols may not be statues, but they can be anything we prioritize above God: career, wealth, relationships, or self-image. Jesus affirmed this when He declared that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37-38). This command challenges us to examine: Who or what truly holds first place in our lives?
The second commandment forbids the making or worshiping of idols (Exodus 20:4-6). This isn’t just about physical images; it addresses anything that takes God’s place in our hearts. Idols are powerless, as Psalm 115:1-8 reminds us, yet we often trust in temporary things to provide security or satisfaction. God commands us to worship Him as He is—not as we imagine or reduce Him to be. Are we trusting in fleeting things or anchoring ourselves in the eternal God?
The third commandment commands us to honor God’s name (Exodus 20:7). This goes beyond avoiding casual misuse or profanity. God’s name represents His character, authority, and presence. How we speak, act, and live should reflect reverence for Him. Colossians 3:17 reminds us to do everything in His name with gratitude, reflecting His glory in our words and deeds. Are we living in a way that honors God and upholds His reputation in the world?
These commandments are not just about personal devotion—they set the tone for a community that reflects God’s moral order. They invite us into a relationship built on worship, trust, and reverence. How can you live this week in deeper obedience to these commands, prioritizing God in every area of your life and reflecting His holiness to those around you?
About this Plan
Although the Ten Commandments were given thousands of years ago, the wisdom and guidance God imparted to Moses through them at Mount Sinai still speaks to our modern lives. Far from being outdated rules, these commandments reveal God’s heart for justice, love, and holiness. They guide our relationships—with Him and with others—and challenge us to live with integrity in a world of shifting values. Are these ancient divine edicts still relevant in a world so different from that which the Israelites experienced? Absolutely! This four-day devotional will explore just how and why.
