Seeing Yourself Through the Eyes of Christ a 6-Day Devotional by Dr. Robyn L. Gobin

DAY 3 OF 6

Replace the Lies with Truth

The truth changes everything. It exposes the lies that have kept us in bondage and releases us to walk in power and purpose. The more we understand the truth about who we are and whose we are, the more freedom we'll experience. We'll be free from the shackles of shame and unworthiness. We'll stop settling for less than we deserve. We'll take more initiative in pursuit of our God-given dreams. We'll stop seeking love, comfort, and acceptance outside of Christ because we will realize we have everything we need in Him.

When we wake up to Satan telling us lies about who we are and what we're capable of, we must be prepared to face opposition. Satan will pull out all the stops by planting seeds of doubt in our minds, throwing our past in our faces, or even using life's circumstances, trials, and temptations to convince us that the lies are true. Satan's goal is to keep us shackled in darkness.

Ephesians 6:11 (NIV) encourages us to "Put on the full armor of God, so that [we] can take [our] stand against the devil's schemes." On the battlefield of the mind, the best weapon against Satan's onslaught is to draw close to the source of light through daily Bible reading and prayer. We must open our Bibles daily, study God's word, and hide it in our hearts through meditation and memorization. We need to spend time talking to God regularly. When we feel discouraged, we must pour out our hearts to Him. We must let Him know how hard it is to release the lies. We must: (1) ask Him to help us embrace the truth, (2) give us the strength to release the lies for good, and (3) heal us from the impact the lies have had on our life choices and relationships.

Yesterday, we exposed the lies by writing them down. Today, we will go deeper by confronting each lie with the truth of God's word. Grab the paper (or open the virtual note) where you wrote the lies. Now, write down the truth next to each lie. Here are some examples to get you started:

Lie: I am unlovable.

Truth: "But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." (Romans 5:8 NLT)

Lie: I am inferior.

Truth: "But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9 NLT)

Lie: Something is wrong with me.

Truth: "You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it." (Psalms 139: 13-14 NLT)

Lie: I am worthless.

Truth: "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the things he planned for us long ago." (Ephesians 2:10 NLT)

Lie: I don't have what it takes.

Truth: "For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13 NLT)

Lie: I am weak.

Truth: "Each time he said, "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me." (2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT)

Lie: I am alone.

Truth: "…For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you." (Joshua 1:5b NLT)

Lie: I have no purpose.

Truth: "You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, I God." (Psalms 139: 16-17 NLT)

Lie: I am destined to fail.

Truth: "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." (Romans 8:28 NLT)

Verse of the Day: John 8:32

Prayer: Father God, thank you for giving me your word. Remind me of your truth when I am tempted to believe a lie. Help me hide your word in my heart so that I will be strengthened to walk in the freedom your truth gives. In Jesus' name, Amen.
