Homeschool Moms Teach the Psalms (Psalm 15-21)

DAY 4 OF 7

Day 4

Psalm 18

Who the Lord Is and What He Has Done

There are 50 verses in Psalm 18 and it is described as a “Psalm of David the servant of the LORD, who spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.”

David is exalting the Lord in song for God’s deliverance from his enemies and their king. In Psalm 18, he makes strong declarations of Who the Lord Is and What He Has Done. These kinds of declarations also kept him through the times where he was running from or facing the enemy. These can be just the ammunition we need in our arsenal when discouragement or disappointment or dismay hit us head on. We can hit back with these declarations as David did.

Who the Lord Is (from verses 1 – 3):

  • My Strength
  • My Rock
  • My Fortress
  • My Deliverer
  • My God
  • My Shield
  • My Salvation
  • My Stronghold

What He Has Done (from verses 4-20):

  • He heard me (v. 4)
  • He rescued me (v. 9)
  • He scattered my foes (v. 9-14)
  • He took me and drew me out of deep water (v. 16)
  • He delivered me from those who hated me and those who were too strong for me (v 16)
  • He supported me (v. 18)
  • He delighted in me (v. 19)
  • He rewarded me (v 20)

We can declare Who The Lord Is and What He Has Done and find that our attitude and stance against the enemy is one of victory and not defeat as we battle to raise God’s children for His glory and in His strength.

To Do With The Kids:

Print out Psalm 18 (or each can use their own Bible). Give the children three different colored highlighters each. As you read Psalm 18 aloud, they will be looking for everything this Psalm says about the past, present, and future. Use a different colored highlighter for each: What the Lord Has Done (past), Who the Lord Is (present), and What He Will Do (future). Since there are 50 verses, go through only 5 or 10 verses at a time per day. Option: take one tense at a time to highlight on different days. Option: highlight and/or make a list of just the declared adjectives David uses to describe God.
