Homeschool Moms Teach the Psalms

DAY 6 OF 7

Day 6

Psalm Six

Mercy For When I Am Weary

There are some homeschool days that I fail miserably. I have been sinful. I have been ashamed. I have cried out about my own sin or lamented over a particular child’s vexing issue and prayed like the Psalmist, “How long, Oh Lord?”

But when I read Psalm Six, I see my Merciful God and fall on my knees in thankfulness. The Scriptures say His mercy and lovingkindness extends to the heavens!

Often it is because I have been harsh with the children that I feel ashamed and sinful. These are the times I must trust the truth of this Psalm and cry out for the mercy of God upon my life, for I am weak and need His healing just like David did. Often it is our own tiredness in being mother, teacher, housekeeper, trainer, cook, and taxi that cause us to react in sinful ways. The Lord knows our frame when we are tired, and when even our “bones are vexed.” He understands and He showers us with His mercy.

Maybe it is from a heavy sorrow or grief that we are weary. Jesus was a man acquainted with sorrow and grief. He gets it. He understands the tears of weariness. So, we cry out with the Psalmist, “O Lord, deliver my soul; Oh save me for Thy mercies’ sake.”

We can say to our soul, “Sin, depart from me, for the Lord has heard my prayer!” Then, let the enemy of our soul be ashamed as the devil is put in his rightful place. This is the place of victory where we can rise up and continue homeschooling, mothering, teaching, and extending the very same mercy to our children. They need it as much as we do.

To Do With The Kids:

Discuss the mercy of God after reading through this Psalm together. How can they show mercy to their siblings? How did God show His mercy through Jesus Christ’s death on the cross? Make an acrostic for the word MERCY. Have each child take a piece of paper and write each letter of the word “mercy” down the left side of the paper. Have them think of a word/phrase for each letter that describes something merciful. For example:

M - Mindful of others

E – Encouraging others

R – Responding kindly

C – Courteous actions

Y – Yielding to others
