"Fortitude"
I believe Abram understood the seriousness of associations when it came to Melchizedek, his allies: Aner, Eshcol and Mamre and the King of Sodom. We must exercise discernment in regards to the people we are in association with. Associations should not be based off haphazard feelings, thoughts and emotions they should be founded on solid convictions ultimately rooted in God’s plan and purpose. It is vital to discern connections because associations matter. Who and what you are linked to say a lot about who you are and what you do.
Abram was in association with Melchizedek the king of Salem who was priest of God Most High. In this association Abram was blessed by Melchizedek and Abram blessed Melchizedek.
Abram was in association with his allies who went with him to rescue his nephew Lot: Aner, Eschol and Mamre. In this association these men supported Abram and Abram spoke on their behalf regarding taking their share of treasured spoils they recovered in battle.
But one association that Abram was cautious of and displayed fortitude in was the one with the King of Sodom. When Abram gave a tenth of all the treasures he had taken in battle to Melchizedek, the King of Sodom said to Abram “Give me the people and keep the goods (spoils of battle) for yourself.” (v.21). Abram’s fortitude in not taking or accepting anything from the King of Sodom was clearly stated. He knew not to have any parts with the King of Sodom.
Abram understood the association with the King of Sodom would result in a negative result, that is why he stated it twice and raised his hand and swore an oath to the LORD Most High, the Creator and Possessor of heaven and earth. Abram’s illustration of declaring his association with God the King of Kings was the one who caused him to be blessed and successful, NOT the King of Sodom.
It is wise to ask God for wisdom and discernment before and after our battles and triumphant feats, because in the midst of emotions and feelings one could get into an association that God has not approved. Seek God in wisdom, fortitude and strength in each association you hope to pursue or are currently in.
