A call to selfless prayer
Jesus modeled selflessness when he walked the earth. He was all about the Father’s business - doing good (Luke 2:49; Acts 10:38). In his final days and moments on earth, Jesus interceded for others.
Luke 22:31-32 (NIV) says, “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
Luke 23:34 (NIV) says, “Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.”
Luke 23:43 (NIV) says, “Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.””
In moments of great pain, betrayal and agony, Jesus showed us what selfless love entails. At the cross, Jesus saved a soul, interceded for his enemies, and modeled forgiveness. I believe Jesus did these things in the most difficult moments of his earthly life to remind us that serving God requires selflessness.
As we participate or engage in Lent, it is important for us to keep the selfless nature of Jesus in mind. This is a period to practice being selfless in prayer.
Over the next few days, we will practice selfless prayer by praying for children in our communities. More than ever before, we must humble ourselves, watch, and pray for the little and vulnerable ones. If possible, invite your family and friends to complete this plan or prayer challenge with you. I believe in the efficacy and power of Matthew 18:19 which says, “"Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.”
Together, we can make our communities, cities, and nations safer for our children.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your love. Thank you for the death and resurrection of Jesus. Thank you for the blood of Jesus which gives us victory and direct access to you. I exalt you because you are worthy. You are the God who answers prayers. You said we should pray that your will be done in earth as it is in heaven; help me to make this my priority. Teach me and give me the grace to be selfless in prayer this season and beyond. I yield myself to your Holy Spirit and I commit these days of intercessory prayers to you. Empower me to pray fervently. Thank you for answering prayers. In Jesus’ name.
