Our God Reigns

DAY 1 OF 5

As the United States enters into a new era in politics, how can we see the positive light of Jesus when the world promotes so much uncertainty, unrest, and division? As Jesus walked the earth in a very unstable political environment how did He align with the politics of that time? Which candidate’s views most closely resemble Jesus? Was Jesus liberal? Conservative? Independent? How does Jesus fit into government? In the Bible, we see that Jesus largely remained apart from politics. In a sense, he was politically agnostic. The government Jesus spoke about was one that He would bring to the earth, not one founded on human effort.

When we look at Scripture, we see that God has always been the King of Kings (1 Timothy 6:15). He is sovereign in every political climate. God’s desire for humanity as His children is to see Him as the Almighty King and to follow Him alone, without the need for an earthly ruler. As we navigate the American political climate—republican or democrat, liberal or conservative, left or right—we need to acknowledge that faith, trust, and hope can only be found in the One who was, who is, and who is to come.

A key component in dealing with every political situation is prayer. Turning to prayer first is an expression of a deeper trust in God than in human leaders.

Where do we turn when difficult times come our way? Do we turn to a friend? A relative? Google? Do we play our favorite music or eat our favorite foods? Or do we first come before the eternal throne of the Almighty, turn to His Scriptures to remember His yoke is easy, His burden is light, and His promises are trustworthy (Matthew 11:28-30)?

God promises that we will all face difficult times in this life (2 Timothy 3:12). He also promises that He will walk with us through anything and everything (Isaiah 41:10). When we are concerned about anything, even the country in which we live or the leader to which we must submit, remember God’s Word: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

As we turn to God in prayer, we are exercising our trust in Him. God alone is wholly trustworthy and in no one else—not a friend, relative, company, president, or king—can we fully put our trust.
