From Prejudice to Purpose
As we’ve been discovering these past few weeks, we all have a unique identity and purpose. We also have a responsibility to look beyond ourselves to the plight of others.
No one exemplified this more than Jesus. From the outcast to the disabled, He continually showed us what it means to look beyond ourselves, lay any pre-conceived notions or prejudices aside and live a life of compassionate love.
Undoubtedly, He sees every person on this earth as valuable. The question is, do we? Could it be that to see the people around us, we need to deconstruct and reprogram our view of those different than us?
No one can truly deal with prejudice until they get to the root and expose it. And perhaps, to get to the root, we must first confront the deep places within ourselves and recognize a heart change may be needed.
Only then will empathy begin to grow and compassion take hold. Only then will we see the value in others and live the life of love Jesus showed us how to live.
Personal Reflection
How do you see others? Through the lens of your prejudices and experiences, or the lens of their God-given value? Does the answer to that question change anything for you in how you respond to the oppressed and hurting around you?
About this Plan
Culture often dictates that our worth, path, and identity are determined by our race, gender, the things we’ve done, and the things that have been done to us. Over the next 30 days, we will discover what it looks like to be bold, transparent, and confront our shame.
