There's Hope For Today

DAY 19 OF 366

It was the kind of place every kid should have memories of … an old log cabin on a New England lake sheltered by tall oaks and soft pines – hot enough in August to appreciate the shade at noon and cool enough in the evenings for a fire in a pot belly stove.

It was swimming and water skiing and camping with Dad on an island overgrown with blueberries. It was two weeks every summer on Lake Lucerne. Schedules were cast aside and every day was treasured.

When the third week of August arrived and we packed to go home, I grieved. While Dad loaded the car I would walk to the dock for one last look at the lake, wishing somehow I could take it all with me.

I guess some wishes come true, because I still carry that place with me now after all these years. I can still smell the damp pine needles after a rain. I can still hear the early morning sounds of the lake, the call of the loon, the high pitched singing of an outboard motor.

My folks knew how to make great memories that live on in the hearts of their children forever. What kind of memories are you making?
