There's Hope For Today

DAY 128 OF 366

On a bicycle charity ride to raise money for breast cancer research, I got to ride with one of my cycling heroes, George Hincapie. For a cyclist, riding with Hincapie is like tossing a football in your backyard with Brady, or Manning, or playing catch with the Boston Red Sox. The ride went out in an orderly fashion, and then it got fast – real fast. I found myself blasting down hills and drafting along a wheel or two off of Big George (a scene I had watched on television over 16 Tours de France). I was in the mix. It was a thrill, but after the first rest stop (charity ride), I couldn’t hold on. We hit a big hill. I never saw George again. For the first 36 miles I ran on pure adrenaline … the last 64 were ridden by pure discipline, probing new boundaries of suffering. Riding with your hero is exhilarating, but most of us don’t often ride with our heroes … or the angels … we ride on discipline and endurance. Life has its thrills, but sometimes the thrill is gone long before the finish line comes into view. So here’s a little advice from a guy who got to ride with the big boys if only for a few miles: Enjoy the great moments – ride like the wind – don’t miss the thrill … but save a little something in the tank for the finish.
