There's Hope For Today

DAY 132 OF 366

Comedian George Gobel asked the question, “Did you ever get the feeling that the world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?”

While in high school, I was hired as a stock boy at Sears. I was responsible for rolling out new merchandise for five departments – ladies’ departments! I didn’t mind rolling racks around, but one day the boss put me behind a register to cover coffee breaks. After that, I was often asked to fill in here or there. I hated it. When one of the girls I liked from school came through with her mother, and I was running the register in the purse section, it was just too much. I found another job.

When I get that “I don’t belong here” feeling, I’m usually looking for a door. People will not stay in churches where they cannot find a sense of belonging. Put a brown pair of shoes with a black tuxedo and the brown shoes will walk. Do you live your life in such a way that people around you feel welcomed? Have you bordered your life with wide entry lanes or barbed wire?

The Holy Spirit works without ceasing among us to affirm God’s welcome. Today we have an opportunity to live in harmony with the Spirit. Be God’s inclusive welcome to somebody standing on the border.
