I love what John Piper has to say about how Christians are to be salt: “… to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world means that at root Christians are so profoundly satisfied by Christ as our eternal reward, we are freed from fear and greed for the sacrifices of love, and are able to rejoice at persecution. When the world sees this, they see the glory of Christ and taste the satisfying pleasure of who he is.” Aahhh… such a powerful challenge! Salt affects a dish greatly. It’s easily recognizable. It infuses its flavor into an entire dish. It may be a small seasoning, but it’s mighty in its impact. The Bible says that we shine Jesus well when we rejoice in persecution (see Matt. 5:11-12). It is so shocking to live this way –in fact - that we greatly affect the world around us. We’re easily recognized as different, and our joy is “tasty” to a world that is desperately searching for hope. Have you lost your joy and “saltiness”? Ask God today to fill you with a deep satisfaction in Him, so that your light will “shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
