Power Read The Bible In 60 Days With Jeff Anderson

DAY 37 OF 60

Day 37

DIRTY JOBS

[Scheduled Reading: Jeremiah 1-17]

There was a TV show called, Dirty Jobswhere host Mike Rowe took on the most difficult, strange, disgusting, or messy occupational duties.

When I think of the biblical prophets, I think of the ultimate “dirty jobs.” Prophet work was downright dangerous...even deadly.

Confession: I went to Wikipedia for these facts, but check out the fate of some of the prophets:

  • Isaiah suffered martyrdom by being sawn in two by King Manasseh (and Manasseh is in the line of Christ!)
  • Jeremiah suffered martyrdom by stoning at Tahpanhes in Ancient Egypt
  • Ezekiel suffered martyrdom in the land of the Chaldeans
  • Some of the minor prophets were martyred as well (i.e. Micah, Amos)

Prophets were special men and a special resurrection awaits them one day. (The heroes in Hebrews 11 understood the special prize that awaits those who suffer for God in this way).

Jeremiah’s calling speaks to the amazing sovereignty of God.

The Lord tells Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (1:5)

This gives me a special appreciation for the prophets. We owe it to their lives to read their accounts.

What a special privilege this 60-day Bible read gives us, the opportunity to honor these fallen prophets for their “dirty work” by reading their very words that they themselves received from the mouth of God.
