Day 19
DARKNESS
[Scheduled Reading: 2 Kings 15-25; 1 Chronicles 1-5]
Darkness is still the big theme. One of Judah’s kings (Ahaz) burns his own son as an offering (2 Kings 16). UNTHINKABLE!
How does humanity sink so low? And we’re talking about descendants of King David!
This brings us to the exile of both Israel (northern kingdom falls, Chapter 17) and Judah (southern kingdom falls, Chapter 25).
What’s so amazing to me is the erratic see-sawing of good kings and bad kings. After the horrible child-sacrificing Ahaz, Judah has a very good king, Hezekiah.
(Think about it, Hezekiah’s brother was sacrificed by their father Ahaz).
Following Hezekiah is a horrible King Manasseh (who also burned his son as an offering). After one more wicked son-king (Amon), Judah has one of its legendary God-fearing kings (Josiah).
Josiah discovers the book of the law and restores the laws, the feasts and sacrifices.
And as the see-saw pattern continues to play out, the next kings are wicked again… and finally Jerusalem is captured by Babylon (Chapter 25).
It’s a dark chapter for the fate of The Seed. But God keeps a remnant alive and the rest of the story is ahead of us.
