TIME ALONE WITH GOD
Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”
And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
What is it that is distracting us from spending time alone with the Lord? Is it anxiety? Is it something that is keeping us away from the Lord that we are not able to enjoy our time alone with Him?
It could be work, family, sickness or something that we are focussing in the future.
Let us look at Martha. She was so distracted and worried.
Anxiety actually means to meditate on a particular issue. The more we meditate, the more we are disturbed. The more we are disturbed, the more we are distracted. It robs us of that wonderful experience with the Lord Jesus Christ.
When we are troubled, our statements of anxiety turn to questions of anger: Don’t you care? We are quick to give instructions than to receive: “Tell her.”
But, let us look at Mary who gave her time to listen to Jesus. Mary was not perturbed by Martha’s outburst. She knew in her heart that worship precedes work.
But Mary knew her priority. She sat at the feet of Jesus and worshipped Him. It is important for us to spend the time alone with the Lord and walk with Him.
Let us celebrate and let us not miss out on what the Lord has to tell us. When Martha complained about Mary, Jesus told her: That which is important, you missed out Martha.
What is really important is to begin the day at the feet of the Lord. So let us find a place and let us make it a habit to have our time alone with the Lord to be strengthened.
Let us commit our anxieties to the Lord, ask Him to undertake our every need. Let us make it part of our spiritual discipline to have time alone with the Lord and continually be in His presence.
When we spend time alone with God, we will never be alone.
