Something Greater – Matthew West
God is the only one who has an aerial view of our lives. He sees how we will get from Point A to Point B. He knows that this road will lead to this place, which will then lead us to this person or to this career. But only he knows this. For us, plan as we may, we can’t see what each decision will lead to. And often what we thought would be a clear, direct route becomes a crooked and winding one.
Do you ever get the feeling that there’s something greater happening here?
Joseph experienced this in the Bible. His story is one of heartache, betrayal, wrongful accusations. He had the gift of prophecy. God gave him dreams that foretold certain events, and he could interpret others’ dreams. In spite of this gift, or perhaps because of it, his brothers hated him and sold him into slavery. Joseph ended up in Egypt. While he was there, he experienced many ups and downs, but everything changed when he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, warning Pharaoh that a great famine was coming. Because of this, Joseph, who began as a slave, rose to second in command over the entire country.
When Joseph is finally reunited with his brothers he tells them, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Gen. 50:20).
We never know what God is using for his purpose. Your life may feel accidental, it may feel cruel or unfair—it certainly did for Joseph—but your life is part of a greater story, one that God is writing and only he knows the ending.
It’s the world that led us here
It’s the majesty and mystery
It’s a billion-heartbeat symphony
Like a river to the ocean
When you look back over your life, what do you see? How did you get to where you are? Did you know all of this would lead you here? Are there moments that you can only attribute to God’s providence? Could God be using something for good that once seemed accidental or meaningless? And could it be because there is something greater happening here?
