All In Devotional - Matthew West

DAY 2 OF 7

Mercy Is a Song – Matthew West

When God instructed Moses to build the tabernacle, he included instructions for the mercy seat. The mercy seat was located in the holy of holies, which was separated by a large veil. Only the high priest could enter into the holy of holies and only once a year on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.

“I will meet with you there above the mercy seat,” God told Moses, “I will speak with you from there” (Ex. 25:21-22). From the beginning, God wanted to dwell among his people, so much so that he had them build a place for him. The mercy seat is proof of a loving God who cares for his children.

When Jesus came, he made a permanent change to the tabernacle. Scripture records that at the time of Jesus’ death on the cross, the veil separating us from the holy of holies was torn in two (Matt. 27:51).

Mercy is a song

Singing to my heart

Telling me it’s ok

Come just as you are

In this act, Jesus became our high priest—the one who gives us direct access to the mercy seat. Hebrews says that because Jesus is now our great high priest, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Heb. 4:16).

The mercy seat is open to us. We don’t have to fear what we bring before God. We can approach his throne with confidence, knowing that what we find there will be mercy and grace. We can sing a new song. Not one of guilt or fear, but of mercy.

There is a life for every soul

No matter where you’ve been, just come on home

Let all God’s children sing along

Hallelujah, chains are gone

Mercy is a song
