Sanctuary
One of the key themes coming out of the New Testament is the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the believer. This is in stark contrast to the visiting or temporal empowering of the Spirit (in certain people) in the Old Testament. Why is this reality something to celebrate? To put it simply, it is a humbling honor to experience a holy God taking residence in saved sinners like us. Not only that, He also leads us toward Christ, away from sin, inspires us to be witnesses to the truth of the gospel, and comforts us during life’s turbulent journey.
There are many passages that express the results of the indwelling Spirit. Romans 8 speaks clearly on His varying effects on the Christian. We see in verse 1 that He sets us free from sin. In verse 6 one will observe that He gives life and peace. Verses 9 guarantees that if He dwells in you, you are not in flesh, meaning you are not ruled by your sinful nature. He also produces righteousness according to verse 10. The Spirit will also raise us from the dead as we saw demonstrated in Jesus’s resurrection (verse 11). He also adopts us, He bears witness that we are children of God, He enables us to put to death the deeds of the body, He confirms that we are heirs of God, He helps us in our weaknesses, and He prays for us.
Take some time today to thank Him for His work in your life and in the life of the church. Practice trusting Him in greater measures today as you acknowledge His presence in your life. If you’re not a Christian pray to God that He would draw you toward Christ Jesus and save you from your sin. Amen.
