The New Heaven and the New Earth
1Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth.” # Isa 65:17–19; 66:22; 2Pe 3:13 # 21:1 Isa 65:17. For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, # Mt 24:35 and there was no more sea. 2I, John, saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, # Gal 4:25–26; Heb 11:10; Rev 3:12 prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. # Rev 19:7; 21:9; 22:17 3And I heard a loud voice from heaven, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them. # Jn 1:14; Rev 7:15 They shall be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. # 2Co 6:16 4‘God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. There shall be no more death.’ # Isa 25:8; 1Co 15:26 # 21:4 Isa 25:8. Neither shall there be any more sorrow nor crying nor pain, for the former things have passed away.” # Isa 35:10
5He who was seated on the throne # Rev 4:9; 20:11 said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Then He said to me, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”
6He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. # Rev 1:8; 22:13 I will give of the spring of the water of life to him who thirsts. # Jn 4:10 7He who overcomes shall inherit all things, # Mt 25:34 and I will be his God and he shall be My son. # Rev 21:3 # 21:7 2Sa 7:14; Ps 89:26. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the abominable, the murderers, the sexually immoral, the sorcerers, the idolaters, # Gal 5:19–21 and all liars shall have their portion in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. # Rev 19:20 This is the second death.”
The New Jerusalem
9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues # Rev 15:1 came to me and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” # Rev 19:7; 21:2 10And he carried me away in the Spirit # Eze 8:3; Rev 1:10; 17:3 to a great and high mountain, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11having the glory of God, her light like a most precious jewel, # Rev 22:5 like a jasper, clear as crystal. # Rev 4:6 12It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, # Rev 21:25 and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the Israelites were written: # Eze 48:31–34 13three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, # Mt 16:18; Heb 11:10 and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. # Eph 2:20
15He who talked with me had a golden rod to measure the city and its gates and wall. 16The city lies as a square, its length as long as its width. He measured the city with the rod: one thousand four hundred miles. # 21:16 Gk 12,000 stadia, or 2,200 kilometers. Its length and breadth and height are equal. 17He then measured its wall: two hundred feet # 21:17 144 cubits, or 65 meters. by the measurement of a man, that is, of an angel. 18The wall was built of jasper and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass. # Rev 21:21 19The foundations of the wall of the city were decorated with all kinds of precious jewels. # Isa 54:11–12 The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; 20the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; and the twelfth, amethyst. 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, # Rev 17:4 transparent as glass.
22I saw no temple in the city, # Jn 4:23 for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. # Rev 1:8 23The city has no need of sun or moon to shine in it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. # Isa 60:19–20; Rev 21:11; 22:5 24And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, # Rev 22:2 and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory and honor into it. 25Its gates shall never be shut by day, for there shall be no night there. # Isa 60:11; Zec 14:7 26They shall bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27No unclean thing shall ever enter it, nor shall anyone who commits abomination or falsehood, # Isa 52:1; Joel 3:17 but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. # Rev 20:12–15
