1 Peter 3

3
Wives and Husbands
1Likewise you wives, be submissive to your own husbands, # Eph 5:22; Col 3:18 so that if any do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, # 1Co 7:16 2as they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3Do not let your adorning be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine clothing. # Isa 3:18–24; 1Ti 2:9–10 4But let it be the hidden nature of the heart, # Ro 7:22 that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. # Ps 149:4 5For in this manner, in the old times, the holy women, who trusted in God, # 1Ti 5:5 adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, 6even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. # Ge 18:12 You are her children as long as you do right and are not afraid with any terror.
7Likewise, you husbands, live considerately with your wives, # Eph 5:25; Col 3:19 giving honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they too are also heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
Suffering When Wronged
8Finally, be all of one mind, compassionate, loving toward one another, gracious, and kind. # Mt 18:33; Ro 12:10 9Do not repay evil for evil, or curse for curse, but on the contrary, bless, knowing that to this you are called, so that you may receive a blessing. # Ro 12:14, 17; 1Th 5:15 10For
“He who would love life
and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil,
and his lips from speaking deceit. # Ps 34:12–16
11Let him turn away from evil and do good;
let him seek peace and pursue it. # Ps 34:14; Mt 5:9
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and His ears are open to their prayers;
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” # 3:10–12 Ps 34:12–16.
13Who is he who will harm you if you follow that which is good? # Pr 16:7 14But even if you suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. # 1Pe 2:19–20 “Do not be afraid of their terror, do not be troubled.” # Isa 8:12–13 # 3:14 Isa 8:12. 15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. # Isa 29:23 Always be ready to give an answer to every man who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, # Col 4:6 with gentleness and fear. 16Have a good conscience # Heb 13:18 so that evildoers who speak evil of you and falsely accuse your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. # 1Pe 2:12 17For it is better, if it is the will of God, that you suffer for doing good than for doing evil. # 1Pe 2:20; 4:19 18For Christ also has once suffered for sins, # Ro 4:25; Heb 9:26; 1Pe 4:1 the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit, 19by whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison, # 1Pe 4:6; 2Pe 2:4; Jude 6 20who in times past were disobedient, # Ge 6:1–5 when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. # Ge 7:7 21Figuratively this is like baptism, which also saves us now. # Mk 16:16; Ac 2:38 It is not washing off the dirt from the body, but a response to God from a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, # 1Pe 1:3 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, # Mk 16:19 with angels and authorities and powers being made subject to Him. # Ro 8:38
