Agab het vir Isebel vertel wat Elia alles gedoen het, ook dat hy al die profete om die lewe gebring het. Toe het Isebel 'n boodskapper na Elia toe gestuur om vir hom te sê: “Mag die gode my om die lewe bring as ek nie môre teen hierdie tyd met jou gemaak het soos jy met die profete nie.” Elia het bang geword en ter wille van sy lewe gevlug. Toe hy by Berseba in Juda kom, het hy sy slaaf daar agtergelaat. Hy self het egter 'n dagreis ver die woestyn in gegaan. Daar het hy onder 'n besembos gaan sit en gewens hy gaan dood. Hy het gesê: “Nou is dit genoeg, Here! Neem my lewe, want ek is niks beter as my voorvaders nie.” Toe gaan hy lê en hy het daar onder die besembos aan die slaap geraak. Toe hy hom weer kom kry, skud 'n engel aan hom en sê: “Word wakker! Eet!”
