Die Here wat my teen die kloue van leeus en bere beskerm het, sal my ook teen hierdie Filistyn beskerm.” Saul het vir hom gesê: “Gaan dan maar; en mag die Here jou help.” Saul trek toe vir Dawid sy eie oorlogsklere aan: hy sit ’n brons helm op sy kop en trek vir hom ’n veghemp aan. Dawid maak Saul se swaard bo-oor sy oorlogsklere vas. Hy probeer toe met die klere loop, maar hy was glad nie gewoond daaraan nie. “Ek kan nie hiermee loop nie,” sê hy vir Saul, “ek is nie gewoond daaraan nie.” Toe trek Dawid die klere uit. Hy vat sy kierie, soek vir hom vyf spoelklippies uit in die spruit, druk dit in die kantsakkie van sy bladsak en met sy slingervel in sy hand gaan hy na die Filistyn toe.
