Met hulle aankoms, toe Dawid terugkeer van sy oorwinning oor die Filistyn, het vroue uit al die stede van Israel gekom om te sing en koning Saul met kringdanse tegemoet te gaan, met tamboeryne, vreugderoepe en driesnarige instrumente. Die dansende vroue het gesing en gesê: “Saul het sy duisende verslaan, maar Dawid sy tienduisende.” Saul het baie kwaad geword. Hierdie saak was verkeerd in sy oë. Hy het gesê: “Aan Dawid gee hulle tienduisende, maar aan my gee hulle die duisende. Hy moet nou nog net die koningskap kry. ” Van daardie dag af het Saul vir Dawid wantrouig dopgehou.
