Dawid het gesê: “Die Here wat my gered het van leeus en bere, dit is Hy wat my sal red van hierdie Filistyn.” Saul het vir Dawid gesê: “Goed, jy mag gaan. Ek bid dat die Here jou sal help.” Saul het toe sy klere geneem en hy het dit vir Dawid gegee om aan te trek. Saul het sy helm van brons op Dawid se kop gesit en hy het gesê Dawid moet die harnas aantrek. Dawid het sy swaard bo-oor die klere vasgemaak met 'n belt en hy het probeer loop, want hy het dit nog nooit gedoen nie. Maar toe sê hy vir Saul: “Ek kan nie met hierdie swaar goed loop nie, ek het dit nog nooit gedoen nie.” Dawid het toe Saul se klere uitgetrek. Hy het sy kierie geneem en hy het vyf gladde klippe in die sloot gaan soek. Hy het dit in sy skaapwagter-sak gesit. Toe het hy nader gegaan na die Filistyn toe en hy het sy slingervel in sy hand vasgehou.
