John 13

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1Now #Matt. 26:2before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that #John 12:23; 17:1His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He #John 15:9loved them to the end.
2And supper being ended, #Luke 22:3the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3Jesus, knowing #Matt. 11:27; (John 5:20–23; 17:2); Acts 2:36; 1 Cor. 15:27; (Heb. 2:8)that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He #John 8:42; 16:28had come from God and #John 17:11; 20:17was going to God, 4#(Luke 22:27; Phil. 2:7, 8)rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, #Matt. 3:14“Lord, are You washing my feet?”
7Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you #John 12:16; 16:12do not understand now, #John 13:19but you will know after this.”
8Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”
Jesus answered him, #(Ps. 51:2, 7; Ezek. 36:25; Acts 22:16; 1 Cor. 6:11; Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5; Heb. 10:22)“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
9Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and #(John 15:3; Eph. 5:26)you are clean, but not all of you.” 11For #John 6:64; 18:4He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”
12So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13#Matt. 23:8, 10; Luke 6:46; (1 Cor. 8:6; 12:3); Eph. 6:9; (Phil. 2:11)You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14#Luke 22:27If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, #(Rom. 12:10; Gal. 6:1, 2; 1 Pet. 5:5)you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15For #Matt. 11:29; Phil. 2:5; (1 Pet. 2:21–24); 1 John 2:6I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16#Matt. 10:24; (Luke 6:40); John 15:20Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17#Matt. 7:24; Luke 11:28; (James 1:25)If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Jesus Identifies His Betrayer
18“I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the #John 15:25; 17:12Scripture may be fulfilled, #Ps. 41:9; Matt. 26:23‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19#John 14:29; 16:4Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 20#Matt. 10:40; Mark 9:37; Luke 9:48; 10:16; Gal. 4:14Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
21#Matt. 26:21; Mark 14:18; Luke 22:21When Jesus had said these things, #John 12:27He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, #Ps. 41:9; Matt. 26:46; Mark 14:42; Luke 22:48; John 6:64; 18:5; Acts 1:17; 1 John 2:19one of you will betray Me.” 22Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.
23Now #John 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.
25Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
26Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it. And having dipped the bread, He gave it to #Matt. 10:4; John 6:70, 71; 12:4; Acts 1:16Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27#Luke 22:3Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29For some thought, because #John 12:6Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
30Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.
The New Commandment
31So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, #John 12:23; Acts 3:13“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and #(John 14:13; 17:4; 1 Pet. 4:11)God is glorified in Him. 32If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and #John 12:23glorify Him immediately. 33Little children, I shall be with you a #John 12:35; 14:19; 16:16–19little while longer. You will seek Me; #Mark 16:19; (John 7:34; 8:21); Acts 1:9and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34#Lev. 19:18; Eph. 5:2; 1 Thess. 4:9; James 2:8; 1 Pet. 1:22; 1 John 2:7A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35#1 John 2:5By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
36Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”
Jesus answered him, “Where I #John 13:33; 14:2; 16:5am going you cannot follow Me now, but #John 21:17; 2 Pet. 1:14you shall follow Me afterward.”
37Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will #Matt. 26:33–35; Mark 14:29–31; Luke 22:33, 34lay down my life for Your sake.”
38Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not #Matt. 26:74; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:61; John 18:25–27crow till you have denied Me three times.
