DAY 3 OF 5

SHE IS PROTECTED

For You

What’s your greatest fear? What’s the one thing that keeps you from finding peace when you crave it the most?

For many years of my life, it was flying. Once I stepped foot on a plane, my heart would beat a little faster, and my palms would get a bit sweatier. When that bird was in the air, my mind would race with anxious thoughts of an engine failing or a hole being ripped in the fuselage. That’s what fear does. It makes our minds run wild, imagining problems and what-if scenarios that take us to dark places and steal our hope.

I’m so thankful for the day I stumbled upon a truth found in Proverbs 3:25-26:

Have no fear of sudden disaster

or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,

for the Lord will be at your side

and will keep your foot from being snared.

I committed these words to memory and acted on the assurance that they are true. I began to ask the Lord to make them real in my experience. When I get on a plane now, I know that I am protected. That I, in fact, have a protector. God’s Spirit used His Word to remind me that God is with me, that He is at my side. Wherever I am, He is there in all His strength and power, keeping me safe, as a good father should.

For Her

Can you think of something you are really afraid of? This may sound silly, but for my daughter Olivia, it is birds! Once she was on a beach in New Jersey, and a bird swooped down and snatched a cheeseburger right from her hands! Since that day, birds have terrified her and have often kept her from enjoying a beautiful park, playground, or picnic. I can’t say that I blame her.

Thankfully, Olivia has a twin sister, Camryn. Camryn does not share Olivia’s fear of birds and often keeps an eye out for them. If Camryn sees a bird coming in Olivia’s direction or hanging out on a nearby pole, she will gently walk beside Olivia and grab her hand. Without Camryn even saying a word, Olivia immediately knows what that means. She squints her eyes and allows Camryn to guide her away from the birds. She doesn’t ask any questions or pulls away because she knows her sister is simply trying to protect her.

I just love watching this happen. Not because I like to see Olivia be afraid, but because I love knowing she is protected.

Did you know that just as Camryn grabs Olivia’s hand and leads her away from danger, God takes care of you? You may not always see what’s hanging around ahead, but He does. He is always there to lead you away from danger. You may be tempted to feel afraid of things, but you don’t have to give in to fear, because you are protected! Always be willing to go where God is leading you because you can trust that He will keep you safe.

Conversation Starter

Mom or Dad, what fear have you overcome through God’s help? Is there a Scripture that has helped you to know you are protected? Daughter, what do you fear now that you need God’s confidence to overcome?

Extra Reading

The devil wants nothing more than for you and for your daughter to live in fear. That could easily happen in a world like ours, especially if your eyes aren’t focused on the only source of perfect protection. Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Instead of focusing on fear and on the thief, the enemy of your soul, choose today to focus on Jesus and His nearness. Remember that He has come and that He is near your family, offering you protection, life, and so much more.
