She Is Yours: A Parent & Daughter Devotional

DAY 1 OF 5

SHE IS CHOSEN

For You

The book of Genesis is a fascinating book. One of its most fascinating characters was a man by the name of Abraham. Abraham has always been a special person to the Hebrews, and he remains that for Christians today. What made Abraham special was not his intellect or his charisma. He had many flaws, just like you or me. What made him special had to do with God, not him. God chose him and promised him an incredible inheritance, and Abraham responded simply by believing. He believed God would do what He said. You can read Abraham’s story in Genesis 11–25. What you’ll find is a guy with insecurities and flaws that were usually exposed through his family life. Despite his faults and constant trip-ups, his mustard-seed-sized faith was “credited…to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6). In other words, God looked on him with grace as if he were perfect.

God promised Abraham an inheritance for a specific purpose. It was not primarily for his own benefit, but for the benefit of generations to come. God wanted Abraham’s leadership to affect his children and household, even down to you and me. Galatians 3:29 says, “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” It was through Jesus Christ and God’s plan that Abraham was considered righteous, and the same is true for you and me today. God simply asks that we believe and that we lead our children and our households after Him.

You were chosen to believe. You were chosen to lead your household after you in that belief. You were chosen to do things for God, just like Abraham.

For Her

When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time learning about the people in the Bible. I remember learning all about Abraham and how God promised to give him a nation. I loved the story of Esther and knew she was a very special girl whom God chose to help save His people. Then of course there were Moses, John the Baptist, Mary…the list could go on and on. There are so many! Who is your favorite Bible character?

I always believed that the people in the Bible must have been very special. After all, God chose them to do some really big and amazing things! But do you know what I didn’t realize? I never understood that the people in the Bible were actually not the only people God chose to do amazing things. He also chose me! And guess what? He chose you too! Even though we weren’t alive when the Bible was written or when Jesus lived on earth, God has very special purposes for us too.

The Bible tells us that God chose us—and not just to sit around and do nothing! He chose each of us for a special reason. Every day, you make lots of choices—what to wear, who to be friends with, which book you are going to read. In the same way, God chose you on purpose and for a purpose! You have a special reason for being here.

You are probably wondering what that purpose is, right? Well, here it is: You have been chosen to be God’s reflection to the people and the world around you. God wants to write a very special story through your life, just as He did through the people you read about in the Bible!
