The Devotional to End All DevotionalsSample

The Devotional to End All Devotionals

DAY 7 OF 40

Prayer, two-way communication with God, is one of the most important spiritual disciplines. Jesus teaches us what to pray, how to pray, when to pray, and where to pray. He also models the correct attitude to take both when praying and when receiving an answer from God.

Today, we’ll take a look at two of the most recognized prayers that Jesus ever prayed, “The Lord’s Prayer” and the prayer He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemene just before His arrest.

For now, just read the first of today’s passages.

Notice that Jesus describes His prayer as a model to be followed, not a script to be repeated, although that’s fine if your attitude is sincere and you speak the words from your heart.

Over the years, people have also developed other useful prayer guides. One of those is the ACTS acrostic.

A  Adoration

C  Confession

T  Thanksgiving

S  Supplication (requesting something of God)

You may notice similarities between the ACTS acrostic and the Lord’s Prayer.

Each letter of the word ACTS stands for a different area of prayer. By praying through the acrostic, a Christian can be more thorough in their sit-down prayer time. The shorter, more casual prayers we pray throughout the day need not include every area.

For now, just read the second of today’s passages.

Prayer isn’t about asking and getting things from God so much as it’s about participating in God’s plan and making sure our words, actions, attitudes, and reactions reflect His character.

In His darkest hour, Jesus didn’t run away from God. He ran to Him.

Use the God Follower method to study both of today’s passages. If a particular verse stands out to you, use the God Follower method to study that verse on its own as well.

  1. What does this passage tell me about God?

  2. What does this passage tell me about being a follower of God?

Thank God for the example of Jesus’ prayer life as you learn to communicate with Him more effectively.
