The Shepherd Feeds the Hungry Sheep

One day, Jesus went up on the side of a hill to teach. He looked up and saw a crowd of people coming toward Him. It had been a long day. The crowd was getting really hungry.

Jesus said to one of His disciples, named Philip, “Where are we going to buy bread to feed all these people?” Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we would not have enough money to buy a piece of bread for all these people!”

Andrew, another of Jesus’ disciples came with the news that there was a boy who had a sack lunch that consisted of five loaves of bread and two fish. However, how was that going to be enough for this many people?

Jesus asked His disciples to sit the crowd on the grassy slopes of the hill. Only counting the men without their families, they were up to 5,000!

Jesus gave thanks for the meal and distributed fish and bread to all the people who were sitting down until they were satisfied. Jesus asked His disciples to get all the leftovers because He did not want anything to go to waste.

The Shepherd Cares

The Shepherd loved His sheep very much. He cared if one of them was sick or hurt. Once a leader of the church came to Jesus and begged Him to go see his daughter who was very sick, about to die. Jesus agreed. When they were on their way, a man from the leader’s house came to give him the news that the daughter was dead. Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed.”

When Jesus arrived at the house, people were crying loudly because the girl was dead. He told them to stop weeping because the girl was not dead. “She sleeps,” He explained. Jesus then went into the girl’s house with only three of His disciples and the girl’s parents. He held the girl’s hand and gave a command: “My child, get up!” At that moment, the girl came back to life and stood up.

Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He will always take care of His sheep because He really loves them. When suffering comes, we can hear Him say, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”
