Bread of Life, Come

The holiday season often stirs up many longings and desires. We may hunger for time with loved ones, peace, or meaningful connections. The world encourages us to satisfy these longings through material means: by buying gifts, preparing extravagant meals, or decorating our homes in picture-perfect ways. Yet, as many of us know, these efforts to create a perfect holiday can leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled. This is the reality we face when we look to anything other than Christ to satisfy our deepest desires.

Jesus speaks to this universal hunger in John 6:35 when He declares, “I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.” While the world offers temporary fulfilment, Christ offers something eternal—He is the Bread that satisfies our soul’s deepest hunger. When He came to earth, He offered not just physical bread but Himself as the source of eternal life.

The people who followed Jesus when He fed the five thousand were looking for their next meal, but they missed the deeper truth: Jesus Himself was the true Bread that gives life to the world. This Christmas, let’s ask ourselves whether we are truly hungry for Christ, the Bread of Life, or if we are merely seeking the trappings of the holiday season. Christ is the one who nourishes our souls and satisfies the longings that the world cannot fulfill. May we remember that He is the feast for our hearts, and may we come to Him this Advent season with hearts ready to receive His provision.
