Becoming a Good Shepherd: Part V
In the Bible, the qualities of a good shepherd are similar to six qualities Jim Collins identified in Level 5 Leaders in his book, “Good to Great.” The fifth quality is finding the right people.
When business is brisk and you’re overwhelmed, it’s easy to want to hire anyone who can fill a slot, especially in a tight job market. This band aid approach, however, will cost you in the long run.
Jim Collins talks about taking enough time and performing due diligence to “get the right people on the bus.”
In Exodus 18:21 Jethro told Moses, “But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain.”
Moses had a whole nation of people who were relying on him. He could have acted fast and thrown people into various leadership positions. However, he was careful, and his diligence paid off with a stabilized nation.
The people you hire aren’t just hands or labor. Even in the lowest positions they still can have a significant impact on the direction and fruitfulness of your business. You need to be diligent and thoughtful when selecting new people to bring aboard your operation.
Slow down and select the right person for the job. It will prove rewarding.
