In December 2017, a series of 29 wildfires ignited across California, burning over 300,000 acres of property. The raging fires caused hazardous breathing conditions, traffic problems, school closings, and at least 2 fatalities. Many of us have heard the phrase “spread like wildfire,” meaning whatever it is, it quickly takes over and dominates. No one looks at a wildfire and says, “Oh, it’s nothing but a little wildfire. We can deal with that tomorrow.” No, wildfires ignite more than a visual; they ignite immediate counteraction.
Paul’s warning to Timothy about false teaching and gossip is to deal with it immediately. Verse 17 of today’s passage explains that quarreling, bickering, and gossip “spread like gangrene.” Just like wildfires, the earlier the issue is stopped, the less damage it can do, and the less healing needed for full restoration.
Words make a difference for God’s kingdom. Not only do negative words, “godless chatter,” harm people, churches and ministries, but they quickly spread. Let’s determine to use our words for God’s glory!
PRAY
Father, please forgive me for the negative things I’ve said or even thought. Help me recall what is good and pleasant; help me speak life into others and use my words for Your glory. Amen.
