Death is close

If you knew your own death was approaching, what would you be concerned about? Throughout 2 Timothy, Paul’s imprisonment has sat in the background as we drink in all he wants to impart to Timothy. But in these nine verses, the hard, lonely, and sacrificial life of sharing the Gospel is brought to light.

We have so much to learn from Paul’s last days: the importance of a clean and pure heart, the richness found in relationships with loved ones, and the permission to tend to our earthly physical needs as we prepare to go home. He also shows us that as we get closer to death, the pull toward our heavenly home and reuniting with Christ is increasingly attractive.

Paul had time to process his pending death and to make his last calls to action. This is not always the case for everyone, and one of the reasons why Paul in Ephesians 4:1–6 teaches that we should always live lives worthy of God every day.

This seems like it might be an impossible task because we are all human, but Paul reminds us that it is Jesus who has been his constant companion. And what the Lord has done for Paul, He will also do for you. Living a life worthy of God can only be done with a deep personal relationship with Jesus. And through this relationship, you will have all the strength and endurance you need to live according to His will—regardless of the circumstances.

  1. Talking about your own death is not easy but necessary. Is your house in order? Who would you call to your side if you were dying? Do they know how much they mean to you?
  2. Are there any amends that you need to make before you meet Jesus? What prevents you from taking steps toward restoration?
  3. In your own words, explain what it means to live a life worthy of God’s calling every day. Is there a particular behavior pattern that prevents you from living this life? Who can help keep you accountable in strengthening this area?

2 Timothy: Endure, Encourage, Equip

From a cold, damp cell in Rome, Paul pens the most intimate letter found in the New Testament in a final effort to fortify Timothy, his fellow servant of the Gospel, before Paul’s impending death. Paul’s letter to Timothy is personal and full of wisdom, warnings, and encouragement as Paul teaches Timothy to be ready to spread the Gospel in and out of season. The question is, are you ready?
