Facing Judgment

Words can hurt. Whether people mean the things they’re saying or not, judgment hurts. As a leader, you will find that people will not always agree with how you choose to lead or believe in the same values you do. How you process unfair criticism can set an example for the people around you.

It’s important to remember the difference between feedback and judgment. If you are failing to take charge of your position or you’re stumbling a little bit in your personal walk with God, you might need a firm reminder through feedback of where you should be and what you should be doing. (Look back at your confession statement from day two often, so you lessen the chances of forgetting your identity and true calling.)

Judgment, however, is a completely different beast. Psalm 34 reminds us that God hears us when we call for help, and He can renew our crushed spirits. We serve a mighty and powerful God who is bigger than any judgment we face. If you find yourself struggling to break the shackles of other people’s opinions, ask God for help and He will answer. Allow Him to fill your heart with His wisdom and love as you continue to lead according to His will.

As a leader, you must also remind yourself to speak with the same grace He has given us when it’s your turn to give feedback. Be slow to judge and quick to love. Stay patient with the people you are leading so that they might see God’s love through your words and actions.

Challenge: A leader will remember God’s opinion is greater than any other. Write down a word you think describes you from God’s eyes. (An example might be: loved, cherished, important, forgiven…)
