Develop Life Rules

No one likes to be mediocre, but all desire to achieve greatness − whether in their personal lives or workplace. Greatness is achieved by living a life of discipline, and discipline is not attained without rules. For a less chaotic personal and corporate life, we need to develop rules to live by. Rules are necessary to succeed at work and add clarity to your relationships with others.

The purpose of the rules of life is to focus our hearts and minds on the task at hand – whether doing routine work in the office or interacting with a colleague.

I had the opportunity to work under a wonderful boss nearly 20 years ago. I have left the company and have not seen him since then, but remembering him still brings a smile to my face. He never raised his voice even though he managed many time-critical projects. He never gave any task (like asking people to work overtime) that he wouldn’t do himself. He led by example. When asked about the secret behind his calm and relaxing nature, he said, ‘When mistakes happen, or project delivery gets delayed despite our best efforts, and I get tempted to lose my cool, I say to myself, “Mistake has happened already – getting angry would not help. Take a deep breath and look for the solution.”’ That was his rule of life.

Rules cannot be classified as big or small – they should be something you do no matter what. You may decide that as soon as you enter your office every morning, you will pray for yourself, your colleagues, and all those with whom you would interact during the day. You may be in a hurry, late for a meeting, or rushing to meet a deadline, but no matter what, you would pray.

A rule should help you grow spiritually, love God more, and bring structure to your life.

Lord, help me live a disciplined life according to Your will. Amen
