God puts Satan to shame

“He [Jesus] disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross.” (Colossians 2:15, NLT)

When Satan tempted Adam and Eve into sin, he offended God. And ever since, his followers seem to think they can rebel against the Lord and break free from Him. All too often, it seems like Satan has triumphed and God has lost the battle. When Jesus died so shamefully on the cross, this seemed to be Satan’s final victory.

But it was not.

The letter to the Corinthians teaches us that God often uses what is weak in the world to shame the strong, and what is foolish in the world to shame the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27). Jesus’ sacrificial death is a great example. By dying on our behalf, He took the debt of our sin away and reconciled us humans with our Creator. In doing so, He broke Satan’s grip on us. He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities, Paul writes, since anyone who believes in Jesus Christ as his Lord is no longer a slave of Satan but a child and servant of God. And Satan can’t do anything to prevent that. Jesus turns out to be stronger. He puts His enemies to open shame, and one day His victory will be admitted by everyone in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

Glory to our Lord and Savior!
