Do your words produce calm or despair? Do they produce peace or anxiety when you speak to those around you?
Today's verse reminds us of the power that our words carry. Such is the impact of our language that the Bible directly describes it as capable of leading to life or death.
I love the prayer in Psalm 141, where the psalmist asks God to take control of his words and keep his lips. We are used to asking God to watch over what might affect us from the outside, but have you ever asked Him to watch over what comes out of your mouth?
Our words are an overflow of that which fills our heart. If we allow all that is good, all that is excellent and all that is worthy of admiration to fill our hearts, then we can be sure that what comes out of our lips will also be good and excellent. As the Bible says, we cannot expect sweet water to come out of a salt water spring, so it is very important that, if we want to speak life, we should also pay attention to what is filling our heart.
As people of faith we have the ability to literally change the narrative around us, because we have the best message that exists in the whole world: a message of purpose, of faith, peace, and grace, a message that produces life in those who hear it.
Let us learn from Job, who even in the midst of trouble produced words of life with his lips. May the God we serve be evident in what we say. In a world that magnifies negative news, a positive confession is not something that can be overlooked. Speaking life will help you make a difference. Wherever you are, may your words bring life around you.
