“Praying Through a Crisis”

Have you ever prayed all the way through a project that was intended to bring an end to a crisis? That’s what Nehemiah did, leading the defenseless people of Jerusalem as they rebuilt the protective wall around the city. They completed the project in 52 days despite wave after wave of opposition.

Throughout the ordeal, Nehemiah was never far away from God, humbling himself through prayer on behalf of his beleaguered people. He went to God right from the start; when he learned of Jerusalem’s condition, his prayer of confession and repentance opened the door for God to pour out His mercy. When enemies threatened the project, Nehemiah prayed that God would punish the attackers. He prayed for strength to finish the project when it was nearing completion.

And his prayers were answered. This included his prayer that the people of Jerusalem would repent – offered at the start and answered after the wall was rebuilt and the people heard the reading of His Word. As he prayed, Nehemiah gave God the glory for everything good that happened.

Nehemiah is a short book but it is packed with other principles for success in rescuing people in crisis.
