Fight the Fear of Failure

Do you ever find yourself procrastinating when it comes to the dreams you have for your life? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to write a book, become a public speaker, or get that promotion at work. The dreams are vivid in your imagination, yet somehow you seem to never take action to make them a reality. You procrastinate.

Procrastination is the spoiler of dreams; it is rooted in fear—perhaps the fear of failure, the fear of success, or both. Specifically, it is the fear that you are not competent enough to reach a certain outcome.

You may be thinking, “If I take a step of faith, a lot could go wrong.” This is the reality that often keeps many from moving forward.  Some women wait years and years until all conditions are perfect before they step out. They often get delayed or derailed with excess preparation.

Others take endless courses, year after year; wait to get their degree; wait until all the stars are perfectly aligned before they even begin to pursue their dreams. If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get started. The time to act is now.

You must put feet to your faith. You must move from thinking and talking about your goals to actually pursuing them.

If you don’t yet have all the skills you need, don’t let that be a hindrance. Hire a coach or a professional consultant to walk you through the process that you feel you need enlightenment on.

And yes, you may indeed “fail” in the eyes of the world. Failure isn’t fatal. It provides the opportunity to start over and do things in a better way. We learn best from our mistakes.

The questions we need to ask ourselves when facing failure are these:

  • Did I do anything to cause it?
  • Could I have done anything to prevent it?
  • Have I learned anything from it?
  • Will I do anything differently because of it?

The more you take steps of faith and succeed, the more likely you are to move forward the next time and the less anxious you will be about failures. Nothing succeeds like success.

“Father, Your Word declares that all things will work together for my good because I love you and I am called according to Your purpose. You have plans to prosper me and to give me a future and a hope. Help me to embrace Your truths and not to be frozen by fear. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.”
