Reading the Bible in Historical Sequence Part 1

A rape causes strife in Shechem. At Bethel, God reaffirms His promise to Jacob. Rachel dies (c.1736 BC) giving birth to Benjamin near Hebron. Esau shifts east starting the nation of Edom (Deuteronomy 2:12).

Note Genesis 36:6: While Jacob was away in Haran, Esau, with his immediate family, shifted to Seir, southeast of the Dead Sea, probably for the better hunting on offer there. Jacob knew of this move (Genesis 32:3). Esau later decided to shift all his extended family there to move away from Jacob’s family. The genealogy in 1 Chronicles 1:35–2:2 repeats much of Genesis 36.
