GOD IS AT WORK

Mountain laurels are my favorite part of spring in San Antonio. We had one in our yard that hadn’t flowered in years, despite my husband, Perry, trying everything he knew to do to get it to bloom. Year after year, I wondered why all the other trees in the neighborhood were doing so well when my tree just looked bleak.

Then one day as I rounded the corner toward our house, I realized our tree was covered in blossoms. I know enough about horticulture to know it didn’t just happen. That tree had been working to produce flowers long before it did. I just hadn’t realized it.

Isn’t that just how God works? At times, everything seems barren. Some seasons of life are excruciatingly hard. Our tree looks desolate while everyone else’s trees seem to be blooming in abundance.

But God is always working. Where we look and see nothing, He looks and sees the whole picture of the way our lives will bear fruit if we just hold on and trust Him. He is already answering those prayers you are praying, even though you might not realize it until that one day you round the corner and see the tree in your yard has burst into bloom.

For a long time, my daughter’s tree seemed so empty compared with everyone else’s. But it was only because things were happening beyond what I could see—things that were about to produce more than I could have ever hoped for. It made me realize that everything healthy that was developing in her life was a result of God giving Perry and me the wisdom and strength to break destructive patterns in our family line that limited our vision of how He saw us and what He could do if we were fully surrendered to Him.

God may delay an answer to prayer, and hard times are inevitably going to happen, but He is always at work. In the words of 1 Corinthians 2:9,

“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”—
the things God has prepared for those who love him.
Eventually, the blooms will show up when you least expect it.

What are a few specific things God might be doing in your daughter’s life right now that you can’t see?
